Jack Willis, the standout performer for French champions Toulouse, was honored as the top player in the esteemed Top 14 league. Since his move to France in 2022, the English flanker has continuously impressed, securing three consecutive Top 14 titles with Toulouse after leaving his childhood club, Wasps.
Initially joining Toulouse on a short-term contract, Willis decided to commit his future to the French club, thereby closing the door on representing England despite his exceptional form at the age of 28, having only earned 14 caps for his national team.
In a remarkable achievement, Willis outshone his Toulouse teammate Thomas Ramos and Bayonne’s Sireli Maqala to clinch the prestigious award in French rugby, recognized as one of the best leagues globally. This accolade, previously held by Antoine Dupont, now belongs to Willis.
During the awards ceremony in Paris, Willis humbly shared credit with his teammates, acknowledging their contributions and expressing gratitude for the opportunities presented to him by Toulouse. Reflecting on his journey, he remarked on the positive turn of events since his initial six-month playing opportunity.
In addition to his domestic success, Willis has also triumphed in the European Cup with Toulouse. He has committed to the club until 2029, with a provision allowing him to potentially return to England in 2027, coinciding with the Rugby World Cup.
While England’s strict selection policy has limited their ability to pick players based overseas, with players like Henry Arundell becoming available only upon returning home, national team coach Steve Borthwick has emphasized the importance of developing a robust domestic system to retain top talent and build a competitive league.
Borthwick stressed the need for English clubs to provide an environment where players are incentivized to stay and excel, thereby ensuring a strong pool of talent for the national team. This vision aligns with the goal of keeping the best players within England and fostering a competitive structure to deter players from seeking opportunities abroad.
