“Aldi Regains Title as UK’s Most Economical Supermarket”

Aldi has regained its position as the most economical supermarket in the UK, according to recent research conducted by consumer group Which?. The study compared the prices of a list of 70 items across various supermarkets. On average, the total cost at Aldi was £121.22, narrowly beating out Lidl, which came in at £122.35 for the same items. Tesco, although slightly pricier, offered savings to Clubcard members, with an average cost of £133.65 compared to £136.20 for non-members.

In contrast, Waitrose emerged as the most expensive option, averaging £166.79 for the 70-item list. Opting to shop at either Aldi or Waitrose could result in savings of over £45 for a family.

Which? conducts this comparison monthly, including both own-brand and branded products like Birds Eye peas and Hovis bread. The analysis also covers a larger list of 183 groceries, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their limited range of branded items. Asda was identified as the most cost-effective for this broader shopping list, averaging £455.52 in the previous month.

Asda’s prices were £9.71 lower than Tesco for the same items when factoring in Clubcard discounts. On the other end of the spectrum, Waitrose was the priciest for the larger shopping list at £522.91, significantly more expensive than Asda. Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, highlighted the ongoing competition between Aldi and Lidl, emphasizing Asda’s affordability for a broader selection of branded goods.

With the holiday season approaching, price-conscious consumers are advised to compare prices across supermarkets as choosing one over another could lead to significant savings. The research data illustrates potential savings of up to 27% by selecting the most cost-effective supermarket for grocery shopping.
