Aldi has revealed intentions to launch 80 new stores within the next two years, marking a significant £1.6 billion investment initiative. The forthcoming 13 weeks will see the opening of 21 stores, including locations in Shoreditch, Durham, and Kirkintilloch.
The popular supermarket chain has identified 20 priority locations for new store openings, such as Bromley, Ealing, South Shields, and Witney. Currently operating 1,060 stores in the UK, Aldi aims to expand to 1,500 stores, generating numerous job opportunities and partnerships with British suppliers.
In its latest financial report covering the 12 months up to December 2024, Aldi reported a revenue surge to £18.1 billion. Although operating profit decreased to £435.5 million, the company attributed this in part to customer-focused price reductions, infrastructure investments, and increased wages for employees.
Aldi has recently slashed prices on over 900 products, investing over £300 million in reductions since the beginning of 2025. Additionally, the supermarket has raised store assistant wages twice this year, ensuring a minimum hourly pay of £13.02 nationally and £14.35 within the M25.
Giles Hurley, Aldi UK and Ireland’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the brand’s commitment to providing high-quality products at competitive prices. With a dedication to everyday low prices and quality, Aldi plans to invest £1.6 billion in expanding its reach to serve more customers across the country.
Aldi was recognized as the most affordable supermarket by Which?, with a basket of 75 items averaging £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025. This cost was 38p lower than the same basket at Lidl with its loyalty program Lidl Plus, which totaled £128.30 on average.
