“Alt-Nets Outshine Major UK Broadband Providers”

A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations in terms of service reliability. The study indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The research highlights that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, are common complaints among broadband users. A significant 91% of customers experienced problems with their web service in the past year, indicating a lack of trouble-free connections for most households.

Sky and Virgin Media were among the major providers with subpar performance. Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts affecting 38% of its customers, while Virgin Media struggled with regular connection issues despite charging higher broadband fees. Additionally, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds.

On the other hand, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received positive feedback for their reliability and service quality. Plusnet stood out among the larger providers, outperforming competitors such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

The findings align with previous Which? research showing that smaller broadband firms consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to major providers in the UK. Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service, with Ofcom’s broadband checker being a useful tool for assessing available networks.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized their ongoing investments in service improvements, citing positive feedback from official sources and independent data ranking Virgin Media as a top performer in various broadband categories.

Overall, the report underscores the importance of quality broadband service as an essential need, urging consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch to providers that offer better experiences.
