An individual from Annapolis Valley is charged with attempted murder and multiple weapons violations following a shooting incident involving a woman known to him. The woman sustained critical injuries and was swiftly taken to the hospital.
Ryan Alexander Cole, aged 36, appeared briefly in Nova Scotia Provincial Court on Monday. His hearing has been adjourned until August 25, and he is currently in custody.
The incident unfolded on Saturday morning in South Farmington in the Annapolis Valley. Upon receiving a report of a shooting, law enforcement responded. The suspect fled the scene in a damaged Mazda sedan, reportedly heading towards Halifax.
Authorities pursued the vehicle and attempted to halt it, deploying a spike belt on the highway. Despite evading the deflation device, the suspect was tracked from the air after abandoning the vehicle.
The Mazda eventually came to a stop after colliding with a tree as the suspect tried to navigate a hiking trail behind a shopping center in the Bedford suburb of Halifax.
Subsequently, the suspect fled on foot, prompting the RCMP to issue an alert. RCMP Cpl. Mandy Edwards emphasized the public safety risk posed by a suspected armed individual and detailed the escalation of alerts to ensure community safety.
Law enforcement agencies, including police dog teams from the RCMP and Halifax Regional Police, along with emergency response units, participated in the apprehension. While confirming the acquaintance between Cole and the victim, Edwards refrained from disclosing the exact nature of their relationship.
Cole has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2008, comprising various charges such as breaching conditions, disarming a police officer, resisting an officer, and unauthorized distribution of intimate images.
