Ant and Dec are nominated once again for the Best Presenter award at the National Television Awards tonight, potentially marking their 46th win at the event. The duo, both aged 49, have been close friends since their time on the BBC teen drama, Byker Grove, in the 1990s, where they portrayed the characters PJ and Duncan.
Their friendship has endured over the years, with the pair even living on the same street in London at one point and continuing to vacation together with their respective spouses and children. Despite a heated argument during a night out in Spain 30 years ago, documented in their joint book “Once Upon a Tyne: Our Story,” Ant and Dec have maintained a strong bond.
The dispute occurred in the 1990s while they were scheduled to appear on GMTV’s “Fun in the Sun” with Anthea Turner. Following a night of drinking, tensions rose between the two as they were preparing for the live show in Torremolinos. Ant and Dec’s disagreement escalated, leading to a physical altercation.
Despite the altercation, the duo managed to reconcile before their appearance on the breakfast show just a few hours later. Their ability to work together seamlessly on screen has been a testament to their enduring friendship. In a 2013 interview, they credited their authenticity and shared bond for the longevity of their partnership.
