Disney World is grieving the loss of Gino the gorilla, a cherished member of the park since its inception. The 44-year-old primate, an endangered western lowland gorilla and the oldest at Animal Kingdom, passed away on Wednesday.
In a heartfelt Facebook message, Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment shared their sorrow over Gino’s passing. They described Gino as a playful and humorous gorilla who had a significant impact on the lives of many at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for almost three decades.
Gino’s legacy includes 14 offspring, substantial contributions to gorilla care and conservation globally, and enduring memories for staff and visitors alike. Despite not reaching his 45th birthday in December, Gino’s story will endure through his species’ future and the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, where Gino resided, opened its doors on April 22, 1998. Gino was a popular attraction for families, known for his chest-beating displays at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the Africa Pavilion.
