Beloved entertainer Robo Shankar sadly passed away at the age of 46, following a sudden collapse on the set of his recent project. The Tamil star was rushed to a Chennai hospital on September 18th after fainting, where he was admitted to the ICU. Tragically, his health deteriorated rapidly, and he was diagnosed with liver and kidney failure.
Robo Shankar was well-recognized for his voice work as Pumbaa in Disney’s The Lion King in 2019 and its sequel in 2024. Overcoming a recent bout of jaundice, he had fans concerned due to significant weight loss during his recovery period.
The moniker “Robo” stemmed from his early performances of robot acts in villages and on television. Beginning his film career in 1997, he gained fame for his role in Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumar after several uncredited appearances.
Despite health challenges, he returned to work and recently participated in Sun TV’s Top Cooku Dupe Cooku show but was eliminated. Tamil actor Kamal Haasan paid a touching tribute, reminiscing about their bond and expressing sorrow at his departure.
Fans flooded social media with condolences, recalling Robo Shankar’s entertainment prowess and the suddenness of his passing at 46. Known for stand-up comedy on STAR Vijay’s Kalakka Povathu Yaaru, he featured in numerous films and TV shows, including a judging role on Kings of Comedy Juniors in 2018.
Survived by his wife, Priyanka Robo Shankar, and daughter, Indraja Shankar, both involved in the entertainment industry, Robo’s final rites will be held in Chennai following his remains’ transport to Valasaravakkam on September 18th.
