SeaWorld San Diego reported the passing of a beluga whale named Cyprus that was rescued from Marineland in Ontario. The nine-year-old male beluga, who arrived at the park in August, stopped eating and was found to have intestinal issues. Despite initially showing positive progress at the park, Cyprus’s health deteriorated, prompting further examination through a necropsy.
Marineland in Ontario faced financial challenges and transferred 30 belugas and four dolphins to other facilities in the U.S. and Spain to avoid euthanasia. Unfortunately, several of the relocated animals have since died, including Cyprus. SeaWorld San Diego assured that the remaining rescued belugas are being closely monitored and cared for as they adapt to their new environment.
In a recent update, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago disclosed the death of Caspian, a beluga from Marineland, due to eating issues and abnormal blood test results. Necropsies on other deceased belugas from Marineland revealed underlying health conditions. Tragically, additional deaths were reported at Oceanografic Valencia in Spain following the relocation of a beluga named Jelly Bean and a dolphin named Echo.
The cause of Cyprus’s death will be shared with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration after the completion of the necropsy. The facilities involved continue to emphasize their commitment to the well-being and care of the rescued belugas amidst these challenging circumstances.
