The Calgary Flames radio broadcasting icon, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher, who served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for radio broadcasts for 33 consecutive seasons starting in 1980, was known for his enthusiastic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His remarkable career spanned the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004 before retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season.
The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s friends, family, and fans, recognizing his enduring impact as a beloved voice that resonated with Flames supporters. Born in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before transitioning to the Flames when they relocated to Calgary from Atlanta. Maher’s dedication and love for the game endeared him to many, and his legacy extended far beyond the broadcast booth.
Rob Kerr, who worked closely with Maher, lamented the loss of a master storyteller who chronicled the Flames’ history. Kerr highlighted Maher’s journalistic integrity and dedication to delivering authentic broadcasts, recalling memorable moments like Maher’s exuberant call during the Flames’ 2004 playoff run. Maher’s illustrious career also included calling NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he witnessed Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal.”
Recognized for his exceptional contributions to NHL broadcasting, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006 and posthumously honored with the naming of the broadcast booth in the Scotiabank Saddledome. Additionally, Maher’s values and virtues live on through an annual award bestowed upon the Flames player who exemplifies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect – a testament to his lasting impact on the Calgary community.
