CMA Investigates Eight Companies for Online Pricing Practices

Eight companies are under investigation for their online pricing practices, with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) focusing on possible misleading tactics and hidden charges. The companies in question include StubHub, Viagogo, AA Driving School, BSM Driving School, Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Marks Electrical.

Specifically, StubHub and Viagogo are being scrutinized for additional charges related to ticket sales, while AA Driving School and BSM Driving School are being looked into for how they display fees on their websites. Gold’s Gym is being investigated for introducing a one-off joining fee midway through the sign-up process. Wayfair, Marks Electrical, and Appliances Direct are also facing inquiries regarding time-limited sales and default opt-ins.

The CMA emphasized that these investigations aim to address potential violations of consumer law. New consumer protection powers are being used for the first time in these cases, with 100 businesses also receiving warnings about their pricing strategies. CMA’s chief executive, Sarah Cardell, stressed the importance of ensuring transparent and fair online shopping experiences for consumers.

Both businesses and consumers are urged to comply with consumer protection laws to maintain trust and fairness in the marketplace. The CMA is committed to taking decisive action against any unlawful practices that harm consumers or undermine fair competition. Spokespersons for AA Driving School and Viagogo have expressed willingness to cooperate with the investigations.

The Mirror has reached out to Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Marks Electrical, and Appliances Direct for their comments. BSM Driving School is a subsidiary of the AA, while Viagogo and StubHub share the same parent company.
