A seasoned globe-trotter recently stumbled upon an abandoned McDonald’s establishment in a remote area of the United States. Chris, an American travel enthusiast with a goal to explore every country globally, shared a video on social media showcasing his adventure at the deserted fast food joint.
Located in Adak, Alaska, this McDonald’s outlet was left deserted in 1994. Despite being overgrown by grass, remnants of the drive-thru and menu board displaying pricing are still visible. The classic red, sloping roof typical of 1990s McDonald’s architecture helps identify the site.
Chris explained that Adak, a city in Alaska, once housed a military base with 6,000 residents at its peak. The McDonald’s outlet was established in 1986 to cater to the base’s population but was shut down when the base closed in the 1990s. The surrounding area includes abandoned suburban homes.
The intrepid traveler described the abandoned McDonald’s as a time capsule, with its exterior and drive-thru windows frozen in time. Notably, the drive-thru menu board listed prices from the past, including a Big Mac for $2.45 (£1.82) and Happy Meal toys based on the 1990s TV series Bobby’s World.
Prices from that era included six Chicken McNuggets for $2.35 (£1.74), a Filet-O-Fish for $1.95 (£1.44), a cheeseburger for $1.09 (81p), and a hamburger for just $0.99 (73p). Breakfast options like a Breakfast Burrito for $1.49 (£1.10) and an Egg McMuffin for $1.95 (£1.44) were also available.
Describing the location as the “loneliest McDonald’s in the world,” Chris noted the site’s remote setting between Alaska and Russia, only accessible by a four-hour bi-weekly flight from Anchorage. The eerie nostalgia of the 1990s resonated with the traveler.
His TikTok video has gained significant traction, amassing 587,700 views, 16,600 likes, and over 100 comments. Viewers expressed nostalgia for the old price board and menu, with some reminiscing about the prices and others noting the unique appearance of the abandoned restaurant.
Observing the intact sign and closure boards, viewers reflected on the site’s preservation and its connection to the local community. The vintage color scheme of the menu board added to the nostalgic ambiance, drawing comparisons to the aesthetics of the past decade.
