“Dismissed as Anxiety, Mom Discovers Thyroid Cancer Battle”

A mother persisted for a decade to unravel the troubling symptoms she faced, disregarded by doctors as solely “anxiety.” Tameika McBride had been grappling with symptoms since 2015, but medical professionals repeatedly assured her that everything was normal, as her blood tests showed no abnormalities.

Despite the dismissals, the mother of two sensed that something was amiss. It was not until she noticed a significant swelling in her neck post-partum that she demanded further investigation. Following initial reassurances, an ultrasound swiftly confirmed her worst fears: she was battling cancer.

Expressing her devastation, the 30-year-old homemaker shared, “With two young children, aged four and two, I went into panic mode. It was traumatising – I was having a meltdown and couldn’t stop crying.”

Reflecting on her journey, Tameika recounted, “I would discuss my symptoms with my doctor and was consistently told it was anxiety, despite my blood work showing no issues. While the symptoms did not incapacitate me, I was generally content, so I accepted that what I was experiencing was normal.”

During her pregnancy in 2019, doctors diagnosed Tameika with an underactive thyroid, attributing it to her pregnancy and prescribing medication. Upon discontinuing the medication, she experienced weight gain and a swollen appearance, yet reassurances followed that her blood work remained normal.

In August 2023, noticing a visible enlargement in her thyroid post childbirth, Tameika sought medical attention again. Despite inconclusive initial scans, subsequent follow-ups were lacking, and the swelling eventually subsided.

However, in November 2024, when she discovered a swollen lymph node on her neck, her concerns resurfaced. After multiple visits and evaluations, including an ultrasound, the shocking revelation of cancer was delivered the next day, leaving Tameika overwhelmed and heartbroken after years of uncertainty.

Subsequent tests confirmed thyroid cancer, leading to a thyroidectomy and neck dissection in April. The operation revealed the presence of cancer in several lymph nodes, intensifying the emotional burden on Tameika and her family.

Further medical evaluations unveiled Hashimoto’s disease and identified her cancer as a rare and aggressive type, spreading more extensively than anticipated, categorizing her as high-risk, amplifying the fear and anxiety for her and her loved ones.

Undergoing radioactive iodine treatment in June, Tameika remained isolated in the hospital for 24 hours, away from her family. Her ongoing battle involves additional treatments and high-dose Vitamin C infusions, recommended by an integrative medicine practitioner.

Post-surgery scans detected remaining cancerous lymph nodes, prompting continued treatment to eradicate them. Navigating the challenges of post-cancer fatigue and uncertainty, Tameika remains grateful for the support received, emphasizing the importance of kindness and generosity during this arduous period.
