Tennessee is set to change the name of Nashville International Airport to honor the legendary country music star Dolly Parton, following her recent passing at the age of 80 in the heart of country music, Nashville.
The decision to rename the airport after Parton came after a social media campaign by fans to pay tribute to the iconic singer. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee confirmed that discussions took place with Parton’s team regarding this move.
Governor Lee expressed, “Dolly Parton’s remarkable life is deeply ingrained in our state’s history. It is fitting that Nashville International Airport, where Tennessee welcomes visitors from around the globe, would carry the name of our beloved state icon, reflecting Dolly’s enduring legacy of music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”
The renaming proposal and the current naming policy of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority will be discussed at a meeting on September 17. The existing policy typically requires a two-year interval after an individual’s passing before naming a property after them.
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is supporting the initiative, with Commissioner Mark Ezell stating, “Dolly Parton has been a significant figure in Tennessee’s tourism industry, serving as a prominent ambassador for our state. Her influence has introduced millions of travelers to our music, landscapes, and hospitable culture. Renaming the airport in her honor marks the perfect start to many journeys across Tennessee.”
Dolly Parton, born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, spent her childhood in a modest cabin in Locust Ridge. She began her musical journey at the age of 13 on the Grand Ole Opry stage in Nashville and later relocated to the city to pursue a career in music.
Known for timeless hits like “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Dolly Parton became one of the highest-selling female artists in history, with over 100 million records sold. Her musical achievements include winning 11 Grammy Awards, including a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
