Sir Elton John caused concern among his loyal followers by posting a picture of himself appearing to be confined to a hospital bed in a shimmering cast. However, this was all part of a publicity stunt for his role in the upcoming movie, Spinal Tap II.
The 78-year-old music icon shared a series of photos on Instagram, depicting him in a hospital gown with bedazzled leg casts and a neck brace, surrounded by flowers and fellow cast members. Many fans assumed he was hospitalized and sent well wishes for his quick recovery.
In his caption, John clarified that the entire scenario was staged for promotional purposes, stating, “Rocked too hard… ended up in a cast! Backstage with Spinal Tap.” He also announced the release of the new film and album, featuring him on specific tracks.
The behind-the-scenes clips accompanying the post revealed that the hospital setting was part of the production, with footage showing the removal of the casts. While some fans were briefly scared by the initial images, others quickly caught on to the prank.
The follow-up project, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, follows the band reuniting after 15 years for a final performance. The soundtrack includes original songs, some of which feature Elton John.
Both the film and album were released on Friday, surprising many as John had not previously disclosed his involvement in the production. By Friday evening, the post had amassed over 210,000 likes.
