In her childhood days in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series set in Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she tuned in to watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring actress Mag Ruffman in the role of Aunt Olivia. When Czajka learned that Ruffman would be at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the show, she didn’t hesitate to secure a ticket.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood equivalent of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Enthusiasts of “Road to Avonlea” traveled from various corners of the globe to attend the sold-out event. The acclaimed Canadian series, broadcast in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The storyline followed the life of young Sarah Stanley, portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her deceased mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show garnered a dedicated fan base over the years.
During the three-day convention, attendees indulged in oyster and wine tastings, engaged in panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and explored filming locations and significant sites related to Montgomery’s legacy. Edward Lemon, the assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, emphasized the enduring appeal of the series, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and community.
Reflecting on the convention, Ruffman expressed her gratitude for the fans’ continued support and emotional connection to the show. She acknowledged that the bond with her character, Olivia, remains strong even after all these years. Czajka shared her joy in introducing the series to her children, highlighting its rare quality of being a show suitable for family viewing and a timeless source of entertainment.
