Federal Court Orders Release of Hidden WWII War Crimes Study

The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections of a significant study from September 1986 commissioned for a federal inquiry into war crimes. In a recent announcement, Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill directed the government to reveal redacted portions of the study concerning the resettlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II.

Over the years, B’nai Brith Canada has been advocating for greater transparency regarding the report authored by Alti Rodal. In response to a request for access to information from B’nai Brith, Library and Archives Canada released some additional segments of the report in February 2024. However, certain parts, including discussions on the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding Nazi collaborators’ settlement in Canada, were still withheld.

In his decision, Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that releasing further details could negatively impact Canada’s international relations.
