“Former Iranian Athlete Finds Freedom Through Running Group in St. John’s”

Ladan Jahankha finds fulfillment in her local running group, as it signifies the realization of her aspirations. Having previously resided in Iran, where women face significant constraints in sports participation, Jahankha cherishes the freedom she now experiences in St. John’s. In Iran, female athletes must adhere to strict dress codes for public competitions, and the government restricts women from engaging in various sporting events.

Notably, recent reports highlighted the arrest of two marathon organizers in Iran for allowing women without hijabs to participate. Jahankha shared her past desire to run in Tehran during her twenties but was impeded by circumstances. Now settled in St. John’s as a teacher, her interest in running was reignited after connecting with a running enthusiast colleague.

Upon discovering a running group on Facebook, Jahankha found support from a coach and beginner runners. She expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the group members. Despite ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S.-Iran conflict, Jahankha views running as a stress-reliever and an integral part of her life. She recently joined a Pride race with her family and is gearing up for another 5-kilometer race in August.

Jahankha expressed profound appreciation to Canada for offering opportunities unavailable in her home country due to restrictions. She emphasized the joy and freedom she experiences in her newfound environment.
