Forensic experts are currently investigating a makeshift camp that served as a hideout for a fugitive who had been evading authorities for nearly four years while on the run with his three young offspring. The site, located deep within dense foliage in New Zealand, is being treated as a crime scene by law enforcement personnel.
Following a failed burglary attempt that resulted in a fatal confrontation with the police, one of the children’s father, Tom Phillips, was killed while one of the minors was found a short distance away. The two other children, Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, had disappeared with Phillips in December 2021 amid a custody battle with their mother, prompting a prolonged search operation.
After years of eluding authorities, the children were discovered in a cluttered bush camp in a remote area of New Zealand. Police located the camp following information provided by one of the children. Images released by law enforcement show quad bikes covered with blankets, spare tires, a plastic container, and various firearms and ammunition at the scene.
Local residents described the area where the camp was found as extremely difficult to locate due to its dense vegetation and rugged terrain. Authorities believe the camp was a temporary shelter and that the family may have been assisted by others while on the run.
The children, who were unharmed, were found after an extensive 12-hour search operation. Police are focusing on the mental well-being of the children as they transition into safety and recovery. Details about their current whereabouts and condition are being kept confidential for their protection.
The mother of the children expressed relief that the ordeal had ended but also sadness over the circumstances. She eagerly anticipates reuniting with her children and emphasized the importance of a peaceful resolution to the situation after years of distress and uncertainty.
