“Gen Z Embraces Fragrance Trends, Prefers Sweet Scents Over Traditional”

A recent study has found that forty percent of Gen Z individuals prefer to wear fragrance wherever they go. Unlike older generations who favor scents like cut grass and sandalwood, Gen Z tends to gravitate towards fragrances such as vanilla, strawberries, cherry blossom, and ‘clean skin’.

The research also revealed that one-third of Gen Z individuals change their fragrances based on the events they attend and their mood. Eight out of ten fragrance buyers acknowledge selecting a scent that boosts their confidence and aligns with their emotions.

According to a survey of 2,000 adults, millennials show a strong preference for mint scents, while Gen X enjoys the smell of fresh laundry. Additionally, 64 percent of Gen Z consumers are willing to pay more for scented products simply because they love the scent.

Interestingly, eighteen percent of Gen Z individuals who appreciate ‘classic’ scents with rich and complex fragrances associate them with nostalgic memories. Vivek Sirohi from Unilever, who conducted the study, emphasized that Gen Z is more open to experimentation compared to older generations who prefer familiar scents for comfort.

Nearly one in three Gen Z individuals follow trends like ‘smellmaxxing’ – the practice of layering aromas – popularized on platforms such as TikTok. These individuals are also keen on purchasing beauty and personal care products inspired by social media trends, with 34 percent buying such products weekly.

Moreover, 56 percent of Gen Z consumers buy scented products without smelling them first, relying on social recommendations or viral trends. Vivek Sirohi highlighted that fragrance has become a form of self-expression for Gen Z, akin to fashion or music, with social media influencing their scent choices and trends like ‘smellmaxxing’ showcasing their creativity.

The emphasis is on continuous innovation to cater to the evolving preferences of Gen Z, blending science, creativity, and cultural insights to shape the future of fragrance.
