Ryder Cup champion Henrik Stenson faces uncertainty in securing spots in specific DP World Tour events due to new regulations. The change follows his payment of hefty fines for joining the breakaway group LIV Golf.
As reported by The Telegraph, an undisclosed policy adjustment means the 49-year-old may no longer have automatic entry into tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the Scottish Open. The criteria for qualification has been altered, leading to a downgrade in Stenson’s eligibility level.
Previously, golf icons like Stenson received exemptions for Rolex Series events based on their legendary status. However, due to a reclassification to Category 11a from Category 5, they now face lower priority in tournament access.
Despite accumulating over £28 million in earnings on the tour and ranking seventh on the career money list, Stenson’s recent relegation from LIV Golf resulted in his return to the DP World Tour after serving a suspension.
The rule adjustments also impact renowned players like Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Paul Casey, introducing uncertainty in their tournament qualification prospects.
Following a 49th-place finish in the season standings, former Open champion Stenson was removed from LIV Golf after the relegation process.
Stenson acknowledged the ups and downs in a sports career, expressing readiness to cope with setbacks and push forward. While there is a possibility for him to secure elite tournament spots or receive sponsor invitations, concerns remain as at least one LIV player was denied participation in the upcoming Desert Classic.
In a contrasting scenario, Rory McIlroy, who abstained from the breakaway league, clinched victory in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai, securing the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.
