“Hidden Fortune Alert: Unclaimed Child Trust Funds Worth £1.5 Billion Await Discovery”

Families across the nation may be overlooking substantial amounts of money stored in forgotten bank accounts, recent findings have unveiled.

Approximately 758,000 young individuals are believed to have significant funds tucked away in unclaimed Child Trust Funds, as per newly released government statistics.

The average unclaimed sum stands at an enticing £1,980, but there could be even larger amounts waiting to be discovered. In the UK, there are roughly 27,000 unclaimed Child Trust Funds exceeding £10,000, with an additional 280,000 accounts holding over £1,000, and 57,000 accounts containing £5,000.

An urgent advisory has been issued to individuals aged between 18 and 23 to verify the existence of any potentially lost accounts. The government has indicated that hundreds of thousands of people might be in possession of substantial savings without realizing it, with an estimated £1.5 billion being unclaimed in Child Trust Funds.

Child Trust Funds are tax-free savings accounts established for children born between September 1, 2002 and January 2, 2011. Although the scheme concluded in 2011, individuals can still access the funds from their accounts.

Regulations state that when the child reaches 16, they assume control of the account’s contents. It matures by the age of 18, at which point they can choose to invest or withdraw the funds.

Initially, the government provided parents with an initial deposit of £250 during the scheme’s inception. With accrued interest and investment growth, these sums may have grown into potentially life-changing amounts.

“Numerous misplaced Child Trust Funds may be due to parents and children being unaware of the account’s existence, lacking information on the account provider, or not knowing how to locate it,” Charlene Young, a senior pensions and savings expert at AJ Bell, shared with The Sun.

“More than a quarter of these accounts were opened by the government due to parents missing the 12-month deadline.”

It is important to note that failing to claim your Child Trust Fund account may result in additional charges. Several providers are imposing fees for managing these accounts, with many charging an annual fee of 1.5%.
