Poundland has reversed its decision to close a store, much to the delight of customers. The discount retailer is currently shutting down 68 branches following its acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1. Among these closures was the Irvine store in Scotland, initially slated to shut on September 14. However, Poundland has now confirmed that the Irvine branch will remain operational “for the foreseeable future.”
Situated in the Rivergate Shopping Centre, the Irvine store received positive reactions from shoppers upon hearing the news of its continued operation. A Poundland spokesperson expressed gratitude for the patience of both customers and staff during the recent period of uncertainty.
Since August, Poundland has already closed or planned to close 57 stores as part of its restructuring efforts. The retailer, which previously had around 800 stores, anticipates reducing its store count to between 650 and 700 through ongoing closures and lease expirations. Additionally, Poundland will shutter its distribution centers in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Bilston, West Midlands by early 2026.
In a strategic move to return to its core offerings, Poundland is introducing a simplified pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 in its UK stores. This pricing transition will be gradually implemented across all UK stores, having been successfully trialed at 17 locations in the West Midlands. The trial phase demonstrated significant price reductions and a focus on popular customer items, with over 60% of grocery products priced at £1.
