Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, which opened 18 months ago, has quickly become the most popular in the UK. Following years of planning and obstacles, Clarkson obtained the necessary permissions to launch the establishment in 2024, a process that unfolded on his reality show, Clarkson’s Farm.
Notably, Clarkson is not the only former Top Gear host with a pub in the UK. His ex-co-host, James May, also owns a pub situated just two hours away, albeit with less media attention. With a shared history of Top Gear and a partner who enjoys The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm, we decided to compare the two by visiting both in one day.
Our journey began in the quaint village of Swallowcliffe in Wiltshire, where James May’s pub is located. Nestled about 12 miles from Salisbury and a short drive from Stonehenge, the pub offers a cozy atmosphere, attracting both locals and visitors. We sampled a variety of dishes from the menu, including a bread slate with homemade breads and spiced hummus, as well as beer-battered fish and chips and a unique burger and fries option.
One standout dish was the butternut squash and artichoke risotto, a seasonal delight that provided a comforting dining experience. The pricing was reasonable, with starters under ten pounds and mains priced at £20 each, making it accessible to all patrons. While the locally sourced Chateaubriand of Wiltshire beef was the priciest item on the menu at £85 per serving, we opted for other choices.
In contrast, our visit to Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, the Farmer’s Dog, required booking six weeks in advance, highlighting its immense popularity. The establishment featured various outbuildings, including The Farmer’s Puppy, offering burgers and light bites. Additionally, visitors could purchase merchandise from the Amazon Prime show, enjoy freshly baked bread from The Farmer’s Dough stall, and indulge in ice cream during the summer months.
The Farmer’s Dog provided a vibrant atmosphere with outdoor seating, allowing guests to savor the picturesque views of the Oxfordshire countryside. Despite the strict timing policies and crowded seating arrangements, the service was prompt and efficient, with a diverse menu selection. While the limited menu options were noted, the food quality and taste were exceptional, with dishes like the Farmer’s Dog Caesar Salad standing out for its flavor.
In conclusion, Jeremy Clarkson’s pub excelled in terms of overall experience and taste compared to James May’s establishment. While The Royal Oak offered competitive pricing and quality, The Farmer’s Dog boasted a more exclusive ambiance. The contrasting atmospheres reflected Jeremy’s pub as a restaurant-pub hybrid lacking traditional pub elements like a fireplace or screens for sports viewing, distinguishing it from James May’s classic pub setting.
