Lorenzo Musetti has had an intense week but has achieved his goal of securing a spot at the ATP Finals. The 23-year-old had a chance to qualify for the first time but was overtaken by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Race to Turin after exiting early at the Paris Masters.
Musetti knew his fate was in his hands at the ATP 250 tournament in Athens. Winning the tournament would secure his place at the ATP Finals, otherwise, Auger-Aliassime would take the final spot.
Although Musetti lost to Novak Djokovic in the final in Athens, Djokovic’s subsequent withdrawal from the year-end Finals allowed Musetti to claim his place. He quickly flew to Turin to prepare for his match against Taylor Fritz.
Expressing his excitement on social media, Musetti called it “a dream that comes true” after confirming his qualification. Despite missing out on the Hellenic Championship title, Musetti was thrilled to secure his place at the ATP Finals.
Musetti revealed that Djokovic informed him on court about his decision not to participate in Turin. Musetti respected Djokovic’s timing of the withdrawal announcement and arrived in Turin ready to compete.
Djokovic’s withdrawal also led to a shuffle in the alternate list, with Alexander Bublik moving up to first alternate and Casper Ruud stepping in as the second alternate. Ruud, who was on holiday, rushed to Turin to be ready if needed, alongside Bublik.
Both Bublik and Ruud will receive compensation for being alternates, with the possibility of increased fees if they are called upon to play. The ATP Finals saw these last-minute adjustments following Djokovic’s unexpected decision.
