“Major Banks to Close 11 High Street Branches This Week”

Numerous high street bank customers are facing the closure of multiple branches, as five major banks have announced upcoming shutdowns. Financial institutions such as Lloyds, Halifax, and NatWest are set to eliminate in-person services from numerous high street locations, with a total of 11 closures scheduled for this week.

NatWest customers will witness the closure of branches in Abingdon, Birmingham, New Market, Willerby, and Yate this week. Concurrently, Halifax is also shuttering local branches in London Clapham Junction, Rhyl, Erdington, Cirencester, and Walkden this week. Additionally, the Lloyds branch in Leeds Armley is included in the closures.

The banks have attributed the branch closures to the increasing trend of customers utilizing online and mobile banking services to manage their accounts, making the case for maintaining physical branches more challenging. However, many customers and small businesses still heavily rely on their local branches for everyday banking needs.

The closure schedules for various banks include NatWest branches shutting down between now and November, Lloyds branches set to close by the end of the year, and Halifax branches scheduled for closure by the end of the year. Bank of Scotland branches are set to close between now and March 2026, while specific closure dates for Santander branches have not been provided.

According to Which?, more than 6,400 bank and building society branches have closed since 2015, averaging at a rate of 53 closures per month. This trend signals a significant transformation in the operational landscape of UK banks, as highlighted by deputy editor Sam Richardson.
