A man hailing from Red Pheasant Cree Nation has been handed a six-year prison sentence for what the judge described as “horrific” actions. Blaisen Nicotine, aged 27, admitted to engaging in inappropriate conduct with two minors and sharing child pornography. During Nicotine’s sentencing at Battleford Court of King’s Bench, Justice Brenda Hildebrandt condemned the appalling nature of the crimes. One incident occurred at a school within Red Pheasant Cree Nation, as per RCMP reports triggered by the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children flagging a video sold on a social media platform. Nicotine, who was attending adult education courses at the school, was caught in a bathroom recording himself in a compromising act when a young student walked in. He proceeded to involve the child in the recording and distributed the footage online. Another victim, a 13-year-old who misrepresented his age as 18, engaged in a brief relationship with Nicotine involving sexual activities. The victims’ identities remain protected by a court order, and no victim impact statements were presented during the proceedings. The agreed facts presented during Nicotine’s sentencing revealed a troubled background marked by violence, substance abuse, and childhood victimization. Despite expressing remorse in court and seeking forgiveness through prayer, Nicotine was sentenced to six years in prison, a term considered lenient but appropriate given the circumstances. Justice Hildebrandt acknowledged the significance of Nicotine’s guilty pleas in sparing the victims from testifying and encouraged him to utilize available rehabilitation programs while serving his remaining sentence of approximately three years and nine months.
