A man was taken into custody following an incident where a woman was reportedly coerced into a park by an unknown individual carrying a firearm and subsequently sexually assaulted. The assault occurred around 9:30 pm on Tuesday, September 9, at Heaton Mersey Park in Stockport. Greater Manchester Police officers responded to the scene promptly and interviewed the victim shortly after the attack. The 28-year-old suspect was apprehended just an hour after the assault was reported and is currently detained.
According to the victim’s testimony, she was approached by the man who compelled her to accompany him, seemingly brandishing a firearm. Upon reaching the park, the man allegedly committed the assault, but the victim managed to escape shortly thereafter. The perpetrator purportedly fled the scene following the assault.
Authorities are conducting investigations in the vicinity to provide assurance to residents. The firearm has been seized for examination to determine its functionality.
Superintendent Dave Henthorne stated, “Stranger rape incidents are rare in Greater Manchester; however, when they do occur, it is crucial to respond swiftly and effectively to prevent further harm. The victim’s ordeal was undeniably frightening, and our priority is to provide her with the necessary support through our specialized officers. Her courage in coming forward is commendable.”
Henthorne added, “This prompt arrest should reassure the community that there is no apparent broader threat, but our local officers are available to address any concerns.
