Markham is set to get noisy as it hosts the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event this weekend, featuring the NTT IndyCar Series and other motorsports. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto since 1986, this will be the first race outside the city on a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will wind through the Unionville GO station grounds, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre. To reach the track, attendees are encouraged to use GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407 with parking available west of the event grounds.
Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services for easy access to the track. Additional trips are scheduled to and from Unionville GO and Union Station, plus a new trip from Burlington GO to Union Station for connections. York Region Transit will offer increased service, and shuttle service will run between designated parking lots and the event site.
Residents have experienced road closures and construction impacts leading up to the event. Several roads in Markham Centre, including Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, and others, will be closed until Monday morning. Further closures will extend until August 27 for track dismantling.
In the spotlight, Spaniard Alex Palou leads the IndyCar points and is a top contender for the race, having won six races this season. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also showcase their skills in supporting races.
Drivers are adjusting to the new Markham track, with its smooth surface and challenging layout. The event promises excitement with its distinct features, including elevation changes and tight sections. Tickets are available for Saturday and Sunday, while Friday’s practice sessions are free, with donations to Make-A-Wish Canada encouraged.
In summary, Markham gears up for an exhilarating weekend of racing action, offering a fresh experience for motorsports enthusiasts and drivers alike.
