“Mother Abandons Children in Fatal House Fire”

Four young girls tragically lost their lives in a residential fire following reports that their mother had left them unsupervised. The incident occurred in Columbus County, North Carolina, prompting a swift response from law enforcement after the mother informed authorities that her daughters were trapped inside the burning house.

Authorities disclosed that the mother, identified as Reagan Powers, aged 28, allegedly abandoned her four children, aged 2, 4, 6, and 7, at home during the fire, leaving them under the care of an 11-year-old. Tragically, the children perished in the blaze, leading to Powers’ subsequent arrest and formal charges of involuntary manslaughter and negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily harm.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement found the residence engulfed in flames, making it impossible to enter safely. Sheriff Bill Rogers and Fire Marshal Shannon Blackman issued a joint statement expressing condolences and calling for community support for the grieving family.

Powers made her initial court appearance, facing potential sentences of up to 59 months for each manslaughter count and up to 88 months for each child abuse count. While her bond was initially set at $500,000, she has since been released on bail. The children’s father, Patrick Ellis, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of his daughters.

A memorial service was held for the four children at a funeral home in Chadbourn, with over 100 attendees paying their respects. The tragic incident sheds light on the broader issue of residential fire fatalities, with statistics showing a significant number of deaths occurring in one- and two-family homes.

The details underscore the importance of fire safety and responsible caregiving, as well as the devastating impact of such incidents on families and communities.
