“Mounjaro Price Hike Prompts ‘Golden Dose’ Extraction Concerns”

The producer of Mounjaro has revealed a significant price increase of up to 170% for certain dosage levels of the medication. This development has caused concern among some patients who fear they may struggle to afford ongoing treatment or may need to switch to a more economical option like Wegovy. To mitigate the rising costs, some users have resorted to extracting what they refer to as the ‘golden dose’ from their pens, which contains residual medication post the designated four doses administered weekly.

The Kwickpen comprises four doses of Mounjaro, with a small amount left in the pen after the final injection for priming purposes. This remaining liquid, labeled the ‘golden dose’ or fifth dose by some users, is being drawn out from the pen, often using a syringe and needle. Enthusiasts of this practice are sharing techniques, suggestions, and guidance on social media platforms, with specialized ‘golden dose plungers’ even available for purchase on eBay.

Despite the potential cost-saving benefits amid price hikes, medical professionals caution against this method due to the risk of severe side effects such as injury or infection. Thorrun Govind, a TV pharmacist and former head of the Royal Society of Pharmacists, emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to prescribed medication guidelines.

Eli Lilly, the manufacturer, advises consulting a healthcare provider for proper Kwikpen usage. The accompanying leaflet explicitly states that the leftover drug should not be utilized, and the pen should be discarded after the fourth dose. Lilly recently announced a more than twofold increase in wholesale prices of Mounjaro, with the highest dose surging from £122 to £330 per month, representing a 170% surge.

Concerns have been raised among patients regarding the sustainability of Mounjaro following the price hike, with nearly half of them previously paying between £150 and £199 monthly for prescriptions. Lilly intends to redesign the Kwikpen to reduce the leftover drug post the fourth dose, ensuring there is enough for priming but not adequate for a fifth dose.

Govin expressed understanding towards the decision to minimize surplus medication in the Kwikpen after four doses, considering it a necessary step. Upset patients have voiced their frustration on platforms like Reddit, expressing financial worries over losing access to the ‘golden dose.’ Some are contemplating switching to Wegovy in response to these changes.
