“Neglect and Tragedy: Infant’s Death Leads to Manslaughter Charges”

An infant of eight months tragically passed away in shocking conditions that left authorities and medical responders stunned at the deplorable state of the residence. The child, identified as Dexter Wilton, was discovered following a distress call made by Natalie Jade Whitehead, his mother, who reported her child as unresponsive.

Upon reaching the scene around 12 minutes later, law enforcement officers were appalled by the unsanitary conditions of Whitehead’s home. Reports indicate the presence of animal waste throughout the premises, with the kitchen cluttered with unwashed dishes, food remnants, and animal-related debris.

The area where Dexter slept was chaotic, with two cribs present, one of which was repurposed for storage, amid scattered soiled diapers and baby garments. Within his sleeping space, an empty baby bottle and a sheet soiled with what appeared to be vomit were found.

Whitehead was discovered lying on a mattress, holding Dexter to her chest and in tears. Investigations revealed that the baby had been deceased for an extended period, with evidence showing that Whitehead and her then-partner, Andrew William Campbell, had neglected to check on the child for approximately 21 hours.

Both Whitehead and Campbell admitted guilt to the manslaughter of Dexter, along with charges of failing to provide essential care and negligent actions causing harm. Whitehead received a nine-year prison sentence in October of the previous year but became eligible for parole in June 2025 after serving nearly four years in custody. Campbell was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years for Dexter’s manslaughter in 2019, with parole eligibility set for September 2026.

During Campbell’s trial, Supreme Court Justice Catherine Muir described the distressing scene at the location in Raceview, Australia, where the tragic incident occurred. The court learned that Dexter had been placed in his crib the night before with a bottle of milk, the room heated, and the door shut.

Whitehead and Campbell neglected to check on Dexter until the following day, spending the intervening time consuming drugs at home. The residence was not only covered in animal waste but also lacked sufficient food supplies.

Justice Muir highlighted the discovery of a bathtub with water and cleaning items, along with a heavily soiled diaper indicative of neglect. Despite Dexter being found unresponsive, emergency services were not immediately contacted; instead, the baby was bathed and changed before authorities were notified.

Campbell took actions to conceal evidence by disposing of soiled baby items and drug paraphernalia, emphasizing a lack of responsibility and care for Dexter’s well-being. Tragically, just days before his passing, Dexter was reported as content and well-cared-for by family members.

A post-mortem examination during Campbell’s trial indicated severe neglect of Dexter’s basic needs, resulting in malnutrition and dehydration. Evidence of drug intake was found in Dexter’s system, underscoring the detrimental impact of substance abuse on his care and safety.

Justice Muir concluded that Dexter’s death was a consequence of neglect and drug influence, emphasizing the failure to provide essential care that ultimately led to the tragic loss of the young child.
