“New Covid Variant ‘Stratus’ Causing Concern”

A medical professional has raised an alert regarding a new rapidly spreading variant of Covid, showing unusual early symptoms. Concerns have been mounting about the proliferation of the latest strain of Covid, named ‘Stratus,’ which includes two variations, XFG and XFG.3. Initially identified in January this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) marked XFG for ‘monitoring’ by June due to its escalating prevalence worldwide.

The XFG strain has swiftly expanded in Ireland recently, representing 73% of all documented Covid cases nationwide last week. Meanwhile, as of September 3, the UK Health Security Agency reported a 7.1% uptick in Coronavirus infections across England compared to the previous week, although the exact impact of the XFG variant remains uncertain.

Stratus, spreading faster than previous mutations, may manifest slightly differently in patients. So, what signs should we watch for, and how can we curb the surge in infections? Dr. Kader, a medical influencer on TikTok (@ask.doctor.k), highlighted that this new strain affects the digestive system in addition to typical Covid symptoms.

Dr. Kader explained, “The new Covid variant, named Stratus or XFG, presents with distinct symptoms compared to earlier strains. It typically starts with ear, nose, and throat issues, such as a hoarse voice or a severe sore throat. Moreover, it often involves gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, bloating, and acid reflux.”

Although Stratus often leads to milder infections, Dr. Kader cautioned that it is highly contagious. He noted, “The rise in Covid cases in hospitals is notable as infections spread rapidly due to changing weather conditions, cooler temperatures, increased indoor gatherings, facilitating virus transmission.”

Dr. Kader recommended three crucial measures to mitigate infection risks. In an effort to coexist with Covid-19 post-pandemic, the Mirror has introduced a Health & Wellbeing WhatsApp community to deliver health updates and Covid news directly to users’ phones. To join, users can click the provided link, select ‘Join Chat,’ and access breaking news and exclusive updates. The community members will also receive special offers, promotions, and information from the Mirror and its partners.

Additionally, the doctor advised TikTok users to stay home if feeling unwell until symptoms improve. It is advisable for the public to remain vigilant for all 18 recognized symptoms of Covid.
