New Look, a popular high street retailer, is reducing its presence in town centers across the country by closing a significant number of its stores. The clothing chain, once operating over 600 stores in the UK, now has just above 330 outlets due to recent restructurings. The trend of closures continues with the upcoming shutdown of its Scarborough store in the Brunswick Centre on September 17.
In recent months, New Look has been closing stores in various regions including Wales, Scotland, Essex, and Cornwall, causing concern among shoppers as familiar brands disappear from local shopping areas. The company attributes these closures to rising costs and changing consumer habits, influenced by factors like the government’s National Insurance increase and the ongoing shift towards online shopping.
Despite the reduction in physical stores, New Look is focusing on digital growth by investing in its online operations and exploring new retail concepts like “omni-channel” strategies. For instance, the retailer recently invested £3 million in its Greater Manchester stores earlier this year to enhance customer experience. A company spokesperson emphasized the importance of a combined approach involving physical stores, the website, and the app to cater effectively to their 10 million customers.
The closures of New Look stores this year have left empty spaces on many high streets, with some locations remaining vacant for extended periods. For example, the Wickford store in Essex, which closed in January after 15 years of operation, is still seeking a new tenant.
Overall, New Look’s strategic shift towards digital platforms highlights the evolving landscape of retail, where traditional stores are adapting to meet changing consumer preferences and economic challenges.
