NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, hailing from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, the Ontario Hockey League confirmed. Mayich, aged 21, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.
According to his player profile, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. The OHL mentioned that he was hospitalized in Arizona on August 20 while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
Following the incident, the St. Louis Blues expressed their support and prayers for Mayich’s recovery. The university where Mayich is listed as a player, Arizona State University, stated that a student from the hockey team collapsed during a morning outdoor exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances of the incident and has not disclosed the student’s identity.
Doug Armstrong, the President of Hockey Operations for the Blues, conveyed the organization’s heartfelt prayers for Mayich’s comfort and recovery during his medical treatment in Arizona. OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford also shared similar sentiments, expressing support for Mayich, his parents, and his family during this challenging time.
The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously celebrated Mayich’s achievements when he signed with the ’67s in 2021 and when he was drafted by the Blues in 2023. The Huskies highlighted his long-standing involvement with the organization since he was nine years old.
