Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White have decided to end their engagement and split up following a five-year relationship.
The couple was last seen together on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles, where they were spotted running errands hand-in-hand. However, Dobrev was later seen without her 5-carat diamond engagement ring at the Eternity premiere during the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7.
Dobrev, best known for her portrayal of Elena Gilbert in the popular CW vampire series for six seasons, has removed her Instagram post announcing the engagement, which had been pinned since White’s romantic proposal in October 2024.
Their breakup was described as a mutual decision made with love and respect, according to a source close to the couple who spoke to PEOPLE.
Shaun White had various plans to propose to Dobrev, initially intending to do so during a summer vacation but changing his mind after Dobrev’s knee injury. Eventually, he proposed during a regular week in late October at The Golden Swan restaurant in New York City, meticulously planning every detail.
The couple first met briefly in 2012 and later connected in 2019 at an event where they were both speakers. Their relationship began in 2019, and they moved in together during the COVID-19 pandemic. White and Dobrev publicly acknowledged their relationship on Instagram in May 2020.
Throughout their five-year relationship, they supported each other’s careers and were frequently seen together on red carpets. Dobrev cheered on White during his final Winter Olympics appearance in Beijing in 2022.
