An urgent warning has been issued to millions of iPhone and Android users by O2 regarding a new scam targeting UK customers. The scam involves fraudulent messages claiming that SIM cards are at risk of deactivation due to failure to accept updated Terms and Conditions. The messages use urgent language and appear to come from official O2 numbers, making them harder to identify as fake.
The scam includes a link to a fake website where personal information is stolen. This information may be used to access MyO2 accounts and other online accounts using stolen passwords. Customers are advised not to click on any links in such messages and to verify their account status directly through the official O2 website or app.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the increasing sophistication of scammers in their tactics. Virgin Media O2 is actively working to combat scams by blocking malicious websites, enhancing fraud monitoring, and urging the public to report suspicious messages.
O2 has provided tips to help customers protect themselves from scams, including not trusting texts requesting acceptance of new Terms and Conditions, being cautious of urgent messages, verifying sender information, avoiding clicking on unexpected links, and changing passwords if any suspicious activity is detected.
