This year marks Markham’s debut as the event host, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, its home since the inaugural event in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, president of IndyCar, expressed disappointment over the track delay despite substantial on-site support from their team.
Local fans, Mark Coburn from Kitchener, Ont., and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, Ont., who have attended the race for two decades, expressed mixed feelings about the postponement. Coburn emphasized the importance of safety checks for a smooth and accident-free event, while Stobo noted the lack of on-track action, a key attraction for fans.
The move from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September. The newly constructed temporary circuit spans Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Notable incomplete features include a pedestrian bridge over Enterprise Boulevard and marshal flag-waving ports in safety fencing.
The event received significant investments from the Ontario and federal governments, along with substantial capital spending by Markham for infrastructure enhancements. Race attendance was encouraged through free Friday admission, with donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation suggested instead of ticket purchases. Despite the sunny weather, fans noted the lack of shade and seating compared to the previous venue at Exhibition Place.
Off-track activities proceeded as planned on Friday, with autograph sessions among the scheduled events. Saturday’s schedule will be action-packed with IndyCar practice, qualifying rounds, and various races around the road course, promising an exciting show for spectators.
