“PM Carney Maintains Dialogue with Trump Amid Trade Tensions”

Prime Minister Mark Carney disclosed that he maintains regular communication with U.S. President Donald Trump, despite the ongoing trade tensions and negative comments from administration officials. Carney indicated that recent discussions with Trump have revolved around global events, particularly focusing on how conflicts in Ukraine and Iran are impacting international energy and grain markets. Speaking at a news conference alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Calgary, Carney emphasized the importance of collaborating with the United States on various issues.

Regarding the tariff disputes between Canada and the U.S., negotiations collapsed last month leading to retaliatory measures from both sides. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on numerous Canadian goods, prompting Canada to respond by imposing equivalent tariffs on U.S. imports. The Trump administration announced additional tariffs and bans on certain Canadian imports. When questioned about potential further countermeasures, Carney stated that his government is evaluating the recent American announcements.

Despite the stalled talks, Carney expressed optimism about reaching a fair agreement with the U.S., emphasizing that Canada is always open to negotiations for a mutually beneficial deal. Meanwhile, Trump and some of his key officials have made disparaging remarks about Canada in various public forums. Carney condemned these remarks, stating that such behavior is unbecoming of their positions.

When pressed about Trump’s continued criticisms of Canada post-negotiation breakdown, Carney refrained from speculating on the motives behind the attacks, emphasizing that the issue revolves around Canada’s sovereignty rather than emotional dynamics.
