Remains of Fugitive Travis Decker Possibly Found

Authorities searching for former soldier Travis Decker, who was responsible for the tragic deaths of his daughters, have announced a significant development. Law enforcement officials have disclosed that they have discovered remains believed to be those of Decker, who was wanted in connection with the killings of his three daughters. The remains were located in the mountains of Washington State, with crime scene response teams currently processing the site.

In a statement released by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) on Thursday, it was mentioned that although a positive identification is pending, initial findings indicate that the recovered remains likely belong to Travis Decker. The 32-year-old had been on the run since June 2, when authorities found his truck along with the bodies of his daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, at a campground near Leavenworth.

Decker had failed to return his daughters to their mother’s residence in Wenatchee, located around 100 miles east of Seattle, after a scheduled visit, according to reports by AP. A former infantryman in the Army, Decker served from March 2013 to July 2021 and had previous military deployment experience in Afghanistan in 2014, where he acquired various survival and navigation skills.

Following his disappearance, over 100 officials conducted an extensive search across hundreds of square miles to locate Decker, with the US Marshals offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to his apprehension. Decker’s ex-wife, Whitney Decker, had raised concerns about his deteriorating mental health and instability in a petition filed last September. She had sought restrictions on his overnight visits with their daughters until he secured stable housing.

Subsequent to an autopsy, the sheriff’s office confirmed that the girls had tragically died from suffocation, having been bound with zip ties and suffocated with plastic bags. The CCSO stated on its Facebook page that they are actively processing the scene with the assistance of a crime scene response team from the WSP for DNA analysis. The Sheriff’s Office is in contact with the Decker family, providing them with support while urging privacy and respect during the investigation.

Additional updates will be provided as the forensic examination and investigation progress. Descriptions of Travis Decker include being between 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins, white, and last seen wearing a cream-colored t-shirt, black shorts, a black mesh cap, and black gauged earrings. Decker faced charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection with the tragic incident.
