“Rybakina Faces Backlash After WTA Finals Win”

Elena Rybakina drew criticism from tennis legend Pam Shriver for refusing to take a photo with WTA CEO Portia Archer after clinching a major victory at the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. Rybakina, from Kazakhstan, secured a £4 million prize by defeating world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, marking her most significant win since claiming the 2022 Wimbledon title.

The decision not to pose with Archer was seen as a protest against the suspension of Rybakina’s coach, Stefano Vukov, for violating the WTA’s code of conduct. Despite previous concerns about Vukov’s behavior towards Rybakina, she expressed happiness at his reinstatement, denying any mistreatment.

Shriver, a commentator and former US Open finalist, publicly criticized Rybakina for snubbing Archer, highlighting the importance of supporting players against abuse. The Original Nine, a group of female players who established their own tour in 1970, were invoked in Shriver’s remarks as a symbol of empowerment.

During her post-match press conference, Rybakina refrained from elaborating on her actions but criticized the WTA for inadequate communication regarding the Vukov issue. Despite the controversy, she celebrated her unexpected victory and commended the tough competition she faced.

In contrast, Sabalenka, who had a successful season with wins at the US Open and high rankings in other Grand Slam events, expressed disappointment at falling short in the Finals. She praised Rybakina’s performance and acknowledged her own emotional response to the defeat.
