Samsung has recently introduced its latest series of innovative foldable smartphones, potentially posing a challenge for Apple.
The tech giant from Korea unveiled three new devices, led by the all-new Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a completely revamped appearance.
In contrast to previous Fold models with a tall cover screen and square main panel, Samsung has opted for a shorter, wider “passport-style” design, which may seem unconventional when closed but offers a more intuitive experience when unfolded.
The device boasts a spacious 7.6-inch display resembling a compact tablet rather than a regular smartphone, catering to activities like watching movies, streaming shows, and gaming while on the move.
The launch holds significance as Apple is anticipated to reveal its first foldable iPhone later this year, with speculations pointing towards a similar radical design choice. If these rumors hold true, Samsung has taken an early lead over its major competitor.
In addition to the design enhancements, Samsung is also making strides in other aspects.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 stands out as the thinnest and lightest Fold iteration yet, weighing just 180g. It incorporates an improved hinge for enhanced durability and reduced long-term breakage risks.
When unfolded, the larger display includes Vision Booster technology and an anti-reflective coating for better visibility under bright sunlight.
Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, the device houses a 4,800mAh battery that can charge up to 63% in just half an hour.
Equipped with a dual-camera system for quality photography and Gorilla Glass for protection against scratches and impacts, the device also offers Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI tools for smarter photo editing, productivity enhancements, and improved search functions.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is priced starting at £1,699 and is open for pre-orders now, setting it apart from Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, expected later with a potential price tag exceeding £2,000.
Apart from the Fold 8, Samsung has also unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, resembling the previous Fold 7 in appearance but sporting upgrades like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a significant camera overhaul with a 200MP main sensor, 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera for enhanced low-light photography and 8K video recording.
The Fold 8 Ultra adopts a new Flex Titanium hinge and refined display structure, reducing the notorious crease while improving the unfolding mechanism for a smoother experience.
With a larger 5,000mAh battery promising extended usage and quick charging to 67% in around 30 minutes, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts from £1,899.
Completing the lineup is the Galaxy Z Flip 8, maintaining Samsung’s popular clamshell design but now thinner and lighter than before.
Enhancements to the external cover display, a stronger aluminium hinge, improved performance, and upgraded camera features are among the key improvements in the Galaxy Z Flip 8, priced starting at £1,149.
