Shaun Murphy expressed strong disapproval towards Matchroom regarding the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event on Monday. This dissatisfaction stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.
The Magician found himself in the tournament’s opening match, facing a disappointing 4-1 loss to Lei Peifan. Murphy, aged 43, disclosed that he only became aware of his Monday match while returning from Nanjing, discovering the event’s lineup on the morning of the competition.
Following his defeat to Lei, Murphy voiced his frustration with the event’s organization, criticizing the group arrangements. He emphasized his commitment to professionalism in the sport and expressed disappointment with Matchroom’s handling of the tournament, calling it “despicable” and highlighting the lack of communication and respect shown towards him.
In contrast, players like Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not participate in the recent International Championship, are scheduled to compete in the Champion of Champions later in the week, unlike Murphy who played on the opening day.
In response to Murphy’s complaints, Matchroom released a statement acknowledging his concerns and emphasizing their focus on player priorities and fairness in event organization. They noted that group assignments are based on seeding and acknowledged the challenges of scheduling, committing to improvements in future events.
On the first day of the Champion of Champions, Judd Trump, the World No. 1, secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei in the evening. Tuesday’s matches feature Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, Allen vs Ziao Xintong, Williams vs Burden, Selby vs Maguire, Robertson vs Ford, and Higgins vs Guodong.
