Ronnie O’Sullivan has expressed his condolences following the passing of esteemed pool player Mika Immonen at the age of 52 after battling cancer.
Immonen, a former world nineball pool champion, was highly respected in the sport and shared a close friendship with snooker icon O’Sullivan, who was deeply saddened by the news.
Taking to social media, O’Sullivan lamented, “So saddened by the news of Mika’s passing, a dear friend whom I held in high regard. Our shared moments in the UK and our forest runs were cherished. Mika was truly one of the greatest pool players of our time, and the memories we created together will forever hold a special place in my heart. His absence is profoundly felt today. x”
In 2001, Immonen made history as the first Finnish athlete to clinch the World Nineball Championship title. He further solidified his legacy in the sport by securing consecutive US Open Pool Championship victories in 2008 and 2009.
Known by the moniker “The Iceman,” Immonen competed in the Mosconi Cup for Team Europe on 15 occasions, contributing to four team triumphs. He was recognized as the player of the decade for the 2000s.
His pinnacle moment arrived in 2012 when he and Petri Makkonen secured the World Cup for Finland. Tragically, Immonen was diagnosed with cancer in 2023.
