The latest forecast from the Met Office predicts snowfall in the coming week as temperatures are set to decrease.
After reaching a high of 14.8C in Cardiff on Monday, the weather is expected to turn colder, with temperatures potentially dropping to as low as 3C by Saturday.
A low-pressure system moving northeastward today will bring heavy rain to various regions, particularly Wales and the Northwest of England. As temperatures fall, there is a likelihood of snowfall starting on Thursday, especially in elevated areas like the Cairngorms in Scotland, parts of Aberdeenshire, and potentially Snowdonia in north Wales later in the week.
The Met Office’s extended forecast indicates that many central and northern UK areas will experience colder and drier conditions, with possible overnight frosts and wintry showers in coastal regions. The southern and southwestern regions may initially remain cloudier, milder, and wetter, with uncertainties about the clearing trend.
Further ahead, there is a chance of more variable weather patterns, with potential rain or showers and occasional hill snow in the northern regions. Temperatures are expected to return closer to seasonal averages.
The weather agency also mentions the possibility of snow later in the month. Netweather, an independent forecaster, also acknowledges the chance of snow this week. Meteorologist Jo Farrow mentioned that temperatures will drop to typical November levels, with Cardiff’s forecasted 10C on Saturday being notably cooler than Monday’s temperature.
Ms Farrow stated, “Colder conditions with frost risks in the north and potential snow showers in Scottish hills will bring temperatures to seasonal norms for November. Southern regions may retain milder conditions into the weekend.”
Additionally, a significant amount of rain is expected in various UK areas, primarily in the western regions as low-pressure systems move in from the Atlantic. The jet stream’s southward movement will continue to bring low-pressure systems towards the UK from western Europe.
Nearly 40 regions are under weather warnings for heavy rain, raising concerns about potential flooding, particularly in south Wales. Hull experienced over 30mm of rain on Monday, while Cranwell, Lincolnshire, saw a deluge of 25.4mm within a few hours.
