TV judge Anton Du Beke has confessed that he is unfamiliar with many of the celebrities selected for the current season of Strictly Come Dancing. Addressing the ongoing criticism that the show’s lineup lacks star power compared to previous years, Du Beke acknowledged that he may encounter some contestants for the first time on the dance floor.
Expressing his surprise, Du Beke mentioned that as time passes, he finds himself less acquainted with the individuals participating in the show. He specifically cited last year’s contestant Tasha Ghouri as someone he had no prior knowledge of. With the increasing inclusion of online personalities on the show, Du Beke noted that it has become common to encounter unfamiliar faces.
Regarding the new season, Du Beke highlighted the participation of 25-year-old YouTuber George Clarke, initially mistaking him for the architect George Clarke. Despite having watched the contestants’ performances leading up to the televised episodes, Du Beke refrained from predicting a winner, emphasizing the need to see more of their dancing abilities.
Reflecting on his role as a judge, Du Beke shared insights on observing the contestants’ body language to gauge their progress. He also addressed concerns about certain contestants having prior dance experience, acknowledging the slight advantage it may offer but pointing out that it does not guarantee success.
Furthermore, Du Beke suggested adjustments to the voting system for the show, advocating for extended voting periods to accommodate viewers who may not watch the program live on Saturday nights. As Strictly Come Dancing embarks on its 23rd season, Du Beke praised the show’s enduring popularity, attributing it to the annual introduction of new cast members and the enthusiastic atmosphere it creates.
Lastly, Du Beke urged the show’s producers to consider modifying the voting rules to allow for more flexible voting options throughout the week, catering to the diverse viewing habits of the audience.
