The mayor of The Pas has stepped down from his position just weeks before the upcoming local election and has also decided not to seek re-election this fall. Andre Murphy, who was elected as mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, announced his resignation online on Monday night, effective immediately.
In an interview with CBC News, Murphy confirmed his resignation and clarified that he will not be running for re-election. The town will be without a mayor for nine weeks until the municipal elections on October 28, during which time Deputy Mayor Carrie Atkinson will handle most of the day-to-day responsibilities.
Murphy revealed that he made the decision with his family’s support and informed the council last Monday. Although he had considered running for another term, he ultimately changed his mind over the summer. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his duties once elected, but after careful consideration, he decided it was time to step back.
Expressing his desire to spend more time with his family, Murphy highlighted his long-standing connection to The Pas and the community members. He mentioned that putting family first was a significant factor in his decision and assured that the town is in good hands despite his departure.
Reflecting on his time as mayor, Murphy pointed out his achievements in fostering collaboration with neighboring communities, addressing local challenges, and securing substantial grants for various projects. He expressed confidence in the town’s council and administration to continue the positive trajectory for The Pas.
