Top jockey Clifford Lee has emerged from a medically induced coma following a motorcycle accident during his vacation. The 29-year-old sustained a neck fracture after falling headfirst and was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. With an impressive track record of 94 wins this year, Lee faces an extended period off the racing circuit as confirmed by Karl Burke, his employer.
Burke disclosed, “He has now been brought out of the induced coma, which marks a positive development. An operation to secure the fractures is imminent. Clifford is resilient, and we remain hopeful that he will successfully navigate the surgery and embark on the road to recovery.”
In a notable achievement in August, Lee clinched the Prix Morny at Deauville with Venetian Sun, adding to his list of triumphs alongside horses like Royal Champion, Al Qareem, and Convergent earlier in the summer.
During his vacation in Greece and Scotland with his family, Lee, who was serving a suspension, suffered the accident while riding a cross-country bike. Burke expressed surprise at Lee’s motorbike hobby but acknowledged the unfortunate incident, emphasizing that it could have been more severe.
Lee’s horses have amassed a total of £2.3 million in earnings in Britain in 2025, with Al Qareem contributing significantly with £237,857 from four victories. Despite not hailing from a racing background, Lee, from south-east London, has showcased his skill in races like the Cambridgeshire, securing consecutive wins with Boiling Point and Liberty Lane, trained by Burke.
Well-wishers have flooded Lee with messages of support as he recuperates in an Edinburgh hospital. Messages include sentiments like, “Wishing Clifford Lee a speedy recovery; he’s been exceptional this season,” reflecting on his successful career and expressing hopes for his swift return to the racetrack.
