UK Braces for -10C Cold Snap; Health Concerns Rise

A blast of frigid Arctic air is expected to cause temperatures to drop to -10C in the UK, prompting concerns from health authorities about a potential increase in heart attacks and strokes. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an amber cold weather alert for certain regions in England, such as Yorkshire and Humber, the North West, and the North East, while the rest of England is under a yellow alert.

These alerts became effective on Monday at midday and will remain in place until Saturday at 8 am. The UKHSA has cautioned that the temperature decrease could strain healthcare services, especially affecting individuals aged 65 and above, those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, and the homeless population.

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals during this prolonged cold spell. The Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings across the UK as a cold northerly flow from the Arctic is expected to bring plummeting temperatures.

Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree highlighted that Wednesday to Friday will be the coldest period, with the potential for impactful weather. Overnight temperatures could dip to minus ten, with a significant wind chill factor making it feel even colder. The Met Office warned that such cold weather may heighten the risk of pneumonia, worsen arthritis, and lead to cardiovascular issues.

Authorities recommend that those at risk from the cold maintain a regular diet, including at least one hot meal daily, consume warm beverages, keep their homes warm, stay active indoors, avoid prolonged sitting, dress in layers when going outside, and remain physically active to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and depression.
