UK Braces for 21-Hour Snow Blizzard

A fresh round of snowfall is on the horizon for the UK, with residents bracing for blizzard conditions lasting up to 21 hours. Advanced weather models indicate that snowfall will commence in Scotland during the early hours of December 15, gradually moving southward to impact Northern Ireland, Wales, and parts of England.

By 9 am, the GFS model forecasts the most intense snowfall in southern Scotland, including Galloway Forest Park, as well as in the Lake District and the Pennines in northern England. Lighter snow showers may also be expected in Northern Ireland around the same time.

Significant snowfall is anticipated in North Wales by 3 pm on December 15, particularly affecting Snowdonia. Dublin in Ireland may also experience snow flurries. Regions escaping snowfall can anticipate rain as the weather system progresses southward. Central and northern England are likely to experience intermittent downpours throughout the day.

Snow coverage projections for 9 pm on December 15 reveal widespread snow accumulation in North Wales, Northern Ireland, northern parts of England, and almost all of Scotland following continuous flurries over 21 hours.

According to BBC Weather’s outlook for December 15 to 28, uncertainties persist due to disturbances in the upper atmosphere affecting weather patterns. There is a possibility of high pressure systems dominating, leading to drier conditions before Christmas, with temperatures expected to be near or slightly above normal. However, colder outbreaks could occur if high pressure strengthens at higher latitudes.

The Met Office also hints at potential snowfall in some areas during the latter half of December. Their forecast for December 16 to 30 suggests a higher likelihood of dry weather due to potential high-pressure systems, though rain, showers, and hill snow remain possibilities. Temperatures are projected to be around average, with occasional colder spells possible.
